Solar wind and geomagnetic activity during two antagonist solar cycles: Comparative study between the solar cycles 23 and 24

نویسندگان

چکیده

To better understand the geomagnetic conditions and particularities of solar cycles 23 24, we present analysis from morphological variations activities parameters IMF-Bz, interplanetary electric field (E), proton density (N), Dst (disturbance storm time), Polar cap (PC) indices (PCN PCS), activity index aa. The occurrences different classes established by Zerbo et al. (2012), through daily averages Aa are also presented for period 1996-2019 covering cycle 24. This investigation reveals: (1) a decrease in during last decade; (2) was magnetically disturbed with 41.52% days versus 72.35% very quiet 24; (3) most important numbers intense severe or magnetic substorm (E, PC index, < -100 nT) recorded 23; (4) 24 presents similar characteristics as 12 14 has experienced spotless at its maximum phase; (5) low compared to 23. two can be qualified antagonistic cycles. Key words: Solar cycle, storms, activity, antagonist cycle.

Solar Wind Plasma Parameter Variability Across Solar Cycles 23 and 24: From Turbulence to Extremes

Solar wind variability spans a wide range of amplitudes and timescales, from turbulent fluctuations to the 11 year solar cycle. We apply the data quantile-quantile (DQQ) method to NASA/Wind observations spanning solar cycles 23 and 24, to study how the uniqueness of each cycle maximum and minimummanifests in the changing statistical distribution of plasma parameters in fast and slow solar wind....

The 13.5-day periodicity in the Sun, solar wind, and geomagnetic activity: The last three solar cycles

We make a detailed analysis of the 13.5-day periodicity of the solar chromosphere, the nearEarth solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field and geomagnetic activity during the last three solar cycles. The 13.5-day periodicity is a real quasi-periodicity whose amplitude varies sizably with time, attaining occasionally values larger than, for example, the amplitude of the 27-day periodicity. In ca...

Evolution of Coronal Holes and Implications for High-Speed Solar Wind During the Minimum Between Cycles 23 and 24

We analyze coronal holes present on the Sun during the extended minimum between Cycles 23 and 24, study their evolution, examine the consequences for the solar wind speed near the Earth, and compare it with the previous minimum in 1996. We identify coronal holes and determine their size and location using a combination of EUV observations from SOHO/EIT and STEREO/EUVI and magnetograms. We find ...

Solar origins of solar wind properties during the cycle 23 solar minimum and rising phase of cycle 24

The solar wind was originally envisioned using a simple dipolar corona/polar coronal hole sources picture, but modern observations and models, together with the recent unusual solar cycle minimum, have demonstrated the limitations of this picture. The solar surface fields in both polar and low-to-mid-latitude active region zones routinely produce coronal magnetic fields and related solar wind s...
